BEGGING is demeaning for human beings. We should rather encourage the beggars to become workers and leave this shameful profession. Dhaka was once known as a city of mosques and now it should better be called though ironically a city of rickshaws and beggars. We find plenty of beggars wherever we go. It is sad to see that some relatively able-bodied persons have taken up begging as a profession as they earn more by begging than doing something that involves physical work. The government has a big role to play to eradicate begging and take steps to rehabilitate them. Baggers have become a part of our daily life in Dhaka and sometimes they become a source of nuisance. Ramadan is just a month away and during Ramadan, the number of beggars increases manifold in the city because part of the Ramadan tradition is for people to give Zakat. Begging is discouraged by Islam. I believe that it is the community's responsibility to assist those who are in genuine need. The state and non-governmental organisations should come forward to turn beggars into workers.
