The government is working to hand over the Plastic Industrial City to the plastic goods makers as soon as possible, said Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun.

He also assured that initiative would be taken to allocate 90 acres of land for plastic zone and 10 acres of land for General Engineering Technology Centre (GETC) from BSCIC chemical village immediately.

The industries minister also said his ministry will continue to provide necessary supports to the plastic manufacturers just like in the past.

The minister was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the 15th Bangladesh International Plastic, Packaging and Printing Industrial Fair/ IPF-2023.

The four-day fair started at International Convention City Bashundhara in the city on Wednesday.

Bangladesh Plastic Good Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BPGMEA) has organised the exposition.

Some 494 companies from 21 countries are participating in the international fair with 750 stalls and booths.

In a written speech, Shamim Ahmed, president of the association, said plastic fair is now a mega event in the South East Asia.

In future, this event will expand with increasing number of participants, he added.

"I hope more than 1,000 stalls and booths will be set up in the next plastic fair," the BPGMEA leader said. There is immense potential of Bangladeshi plastic goods.

Especially export will increase gradually, he added.

Now Bangladesh exports plastic products (direct and deemed) worth about US$ 1.2 billion annually.

The IPF is playing a crucial role in popularising Bangladeshi plastic products to the international market, he observed.
