Unilever Bangladesh Limited (UBL) and Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together on certain SDGs with Ready Made Garments (RMG) industry and its workers for the next three years.
Through this partnership, Unilever intends to bring its brands’ purpose to life while doing genuine good for the society.
This join initiative named ‘Aastha’ was signed by Kedar Lele, CEO and Managing Director of Unilever Bangladesh Limited and Dr Rubana Huq, President, BGMEA, according to a media release.
The collaboration aims to positively impact over 1 million workers and enhance their overall health and wellbeing,
Four SDGs and six National Performance Indicators (Bangladesh Government’s specific targets under each of these goals) have been identified as the key focus areas of this partnership.
UBL will also make its products available for workers inside factory premises (wherever there is a shop owned by the factory or a 3rd party) at special prices exclusively, the release added.
To commemorate this MoU, Unilever and BGMEA organised a signing ceremony on Monday where Md Nojibur Rahman, Principal Secretary to the Hon’ble Prime Minister, People’s Republic of Bangladesh (Chief Guest) , Nitin Paranjpe, Global Chief Operating Officer of Unilever, Dr Rubana Huq, President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and exporters Association (BGMEA), Robert Chatterton Dickson, British High Commissioner to Bangladesh (Guest of Honor), Harry Verweij, Netherlands Ambassador to Bangladesh (Guest of Honor) and Sanjiv Mehta, President of Unilever South Asia were present.
Along with signing of Aastha MoU, Unilever Bangladesh also signed independent MoU with 18 garment factories to improve livelihoods of their workers through different initiatives.
