Three-day international trade show begins in city

A three-day international tradeshow titled 'Leathertech Bangladesh-2019 kicked off on Thursday aiming to bring global technology at doorstep of the country's leather industry.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi inaugurated the event at the International Convention City, Basundhara in the capital.

“With continuous growth and the government support the sector is working towards achieving the goal of earning $5.0 billion in exports by 2021. We also want the private sector to come forward for achieving this goal,” the minister said at the inaugural ceremony.

Organisers of the show stated that the government is forming a high-level taskforce to identify the problems of the leather sector and the means to address them.

Besides, Bangladesh plans to invite Leather Working Group (LWG), a global rights body, to examine the Savar Tannery Industrial Estate (STIE) for attaining the standard certificate to accelerate growth of the sector.

Nanda Gopal K, director of the show's organiser ASK Trade and Exhibitions Pvt Ltd said that the tradeshow will showcase sustainable technologies for the leather industry needed for its expansion and modernisation. 

Besides, the local businessmen can be benefited from the event by visiting the tradeshow in person, he added.

Over 300 exhibitors from 20 countries, including India, China and Pakistan are participating in the event.
