Tea auction in Sreemangal to begin Monday

The much-awaited second tea auction centre of the country at Sreemangal in Moulvibazar is all set to start its activity from Monday.

Bangladesh Tea Board Chairman Major General Md Jahangir Al Mustahidur Rahman will begin the auction at Khan Tower in the district around 8:30 am.

Later at 2 pm, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed will officially inaugurate the auction through video conference from his ministry office in the capital.

The auction will be followed by a cultural programme to be held around 6:30pm where Commerce Secretary Shubhashish Basu will be present, reports UNB.

Jahar Tarafdar, member secretary of Tea Planters and Traders Association of Bangladesh (TTAB) in Sreemangal said more than 500,000 kilograms of tea will be presented for the auction on the first day.

The expected price of the tea is around Tk110 million, he added.

A total of twelve brokerage firms and more than 200 auctioneers are expected to participate in the auction.
