Poultry industry demands withdrawal of advance tax on imports

The poultry industry has demanded the withdrawal of a 5.0 per cent advance tax (AT) on raw material imports to save the sector going through a critical condition.

Two associations involving the industry placed the demand during a press conference titled 'withdraw AT on import of raw materials for the poultry, fish and dairy feed', held at the National Press Club in Dhaka city on Saturday.

They also called for the removal of a 5.0 per cent tax at source on sourcing raw materials from domestic sources.

Feed Industries Association of Bangladesh (FIAB) and Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council(BPICC) organised the press conference.

Citing that the feed Industry is a VAT-exempted sector, BPICC president Moshiur Rahman questioned the rationality of realising AT from them.

The AT and the tax at source have been causing a rise in production costs and it might hit hard the small and medium scale poultry, fish and dairy farms, he said.

FIAB general secretary Md Ahsanuzzaman presented the keynote, while president of the same organisation Ihtesham B Shahjahan and vice president Shamsul Arefin Khaled, among others, spoke.
