MoC to strengthen monitoring to keep onion prices stable  

The Ministry of Commerce (MoC) will further strengthen its monitoring to keep price of onion stable.

The ministry will go for strong monitoring to examine any manipulation and syndication in onion prices, edible oils and other essential commodities by any unscrupulous trader, according to a statement issued on Monday.

Regarding onions, the statement said that there is adequate supply of this vegetable in the market,

Both the production and import of the item are sufficient in the country, and there is no reason for such increase of onion price, it further said.

Besides, the respective district administration will strengthen their operations to keep price of onions and other essentials stable.

The Ministry of Commerce has already sent necessary instructions to the concerned departments and the district administrations across the country, the statement said.

According to official data, the annual demand for onion in the country is about 2.4 million tonnes.

The country produced 1.9 million tonnes last season.

Bangladesh imported over 570,000 tonnes of onions from India in the 2018-19 Indian fiscal year ending on March 30, 2019, according to India's Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority.
