Limited banking for five more days likely

The central bank is set to extend banking services on a limited scale for another five workdays to help curb coronavirus transmission.

The banks might be asked to provide limited services from April 05 to April 09 by keeping open their branches for specific work hours.

"Banking hours, including cash transactions, may increase slightly during the period under review," a senior official of the Bangladesh Bank (BB) told the FE on Wednesday night.

The central bank is likely to issue a circular in this connection today (Thursday), he added.

On March 24, the BB asked the banks to provide services on a limited scale from March 29 to April 02 by keeping open their branches from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm.

Cash transactions can be made from 10:00 am to 12 noon each working day.

The operations of National Payment Switch Bangladesh, Bangladesh Electronic Funds Transfer Network and Bangladesh Automated Clearing House will be extended further during the period, said another BB official.

Decision is yet to be finalised on the functions of Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS), the central banker said while replying to a query.

Earlier, the banking regulator said the operations of RTGS will be suspended until April 02.

The government on Wednesday decided to extend the ongoing closure of public and private offices and all other non-essential services until April 11 to curb the spread of COVID-19 superbug.

Earlier, it declared all offices and schools shut from March 26 to April 04 on the same ground.
