Indian businesses seek to invest in BD EZs

An Indian business delegation has shown interest in investing in Bangladesh's economic zones (EZs).

Leaders of the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) from India's West Bengal showed a particular interest in the sectors like manufacturing, engineering, energy, power, IT, skilled human resources, modern agricultural management, shipping and service.

This was revealed at a views exchange meeting between officials of the Indian chamber and Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) on Monday, said a statement.

BEZA Executive Chairman Shaikh Yusuf Harun presided over the meeting in Dhaka, while General Manager Hasan Arif, among other top officials, was present.

BCCI President Designate Gautam Ray led the Indian delegation.

Welcoming the delegates, Mr Harun highlighted different aspects of investment facilities in Bangladesh.

The EZs are designed to host industries that will manufacture and export goods worth $40 billion every year by 2030, he said.

There has been an excellent bilateral relation between Bangladesh and India for a long time, he said, adding that the BEZA is working hard to further consolidate this relationship.

BEZA is working to set up two Indian EZs, one of which is located in Mongla near the border between the two countries and the other is located at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar in Chattogram's Mirsarai.

Several Indian multinationals, including Asian Paints, Marico, and Sakata, have already invested in different EZs across the country, BEZA executive chairman told the visiting delegation.

In response, the leader of the Indian delegation, Gautam Ray, said all the members were impressed by the hospitality from their Bangladeshi counterparts.

"The BCCI is highly interested in investing in Bangladesh's economic zones and fruitful discussions will continue in this regard," he said.

A 20-member BCCI delegation is now visiting Bangladesh to explore bilateral trade opportunities.

The delegates have also met different public and private organisations, including the Ministry of Commerce, Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), and several trade bodies in Dhaka and Chattogram.
