India seeks to recommence two border haats

India has sought to reopen two border bazaars across the frontiers to facilitate its trans-border trade with Bangladesh, sources said.

The haats are at Chagainaya (Bangladesh)-Srinagar (India) and Kasba (Bangladesh)-Kamlasagar (India) border points.

The Indian high commission in Dhaka has written to foreign and commerce ministries to take necessary steps to this end.

The Tripura government will take required action to reopen the bazaars on Indian side.

Over the last decade, a total of 10 border haats have been established along the Indo-Bangla border in Tripura and Meghalaya states.

Of them, six are in Meghalaya and four in Tripura.

In fiscal year 2021, Bangladesh imported goods worth $9.7 billion from India and exported over $1.4 billion.

Border haat is a weekly marketplace jointly organised by the governments of Bangladesh and India.

In addition to serve as the shopping facility for locals and tourists, border haat is a meeting place for people from the two countries.

It also helps local people on both sides of the border to earn their livelihood.
