In the backdrop of India's imposition of ban on onion export, the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) has called upon the importers to diversify the source if onion import instead of a particular country.
They urged them to import the key cooking spice from different other countries including Egypt, Pakistan, Myanmar and China. The apex chamber body of Chattogram also urged the retail buyers not to make local onion market volatite by purchasing more onions than the necessity.
CCCI president Mahbubul Alam made the call in a statement on Tuesday.
He said, "There is no crisis of onions in Bangladesh while there are many opportunities to import onion from many other countries (rather than only a particular source). I call upon the businessmen and importers to import onions from Egypt, Pakistan, Myanmar and China. I also call upon the people and traders not to create manmade turmoil in the markets."
He also requested to state-owned Trading Corporation of Bangladesh or TCB to open more fair-price outlets of onion in cities, including the port city, and rural areas to keep the market stable.
