Hundreds of workers return from CEPZ gate

CHATTOGRAM: Hundreds of workers who went to their villages to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha with their families have returned to join their duties at Chattogram Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) on Saturday as they did not get notice from the authorities of their factories which remained closed due to the lockdown.

Sources said, many workers also came back from village homes on Friday to join their jobs but after arriving at the CEPZ

gate, they found that the factories were closed for the lockdown.

After staying there for some time, they returned to their residences.

Nasima Banu, a worker at a readymade garment factory, said, "We returned to the port city after the Eid. As the factory authority did not announce that their factory has been closed, we arrived here to join our jobs. If the factory authority notified us about the closure of the factory, we would not have come to the CEPZ during the lockdown."

General Manager of CEPZ Moshiuddin Bin Mejbah said, the CEPZ will remain closed during the current lockdown. However, the decision to close all garment factories was taken later, he said.

"As a result, around 600 workers came to the CEPZ gate and later they returned back," he added.
