Green chilli rate shoots up in Tangail kitchen market

TANGAIL, Oct 16: Prices of green chilli have shot up at the local kitchen market in the district.

A kg of green chilli is being sold at Tk 200 to Tk 250 per kg in the local markets. Market sources said floodwater damaged a good number of chilli field in the area. They said supply shortage is the main reason of the price hike.

A crop specialist of DAE, Tangail, said chilli plants are sensitive. Too much water is harmful for it. Recent flood situation have damaged around 75 per cent of the total field across the district. 

Hasan Miah, a vegetables trader, said chilli is being sold at a high rate in the market. Traders have been trying to tackle the situation by bringing the essential kitchen item from other districts.

Grower Moyez Miah of village Chowbaria under Sadar upazila said recent flood has destroyed his 25-decimal green chilli field.

DAE, Tangail sources said a total 962 hectares of land have been brought under green chilli cultivation in the district with a production target of 1770 tonnes.
