Government signs deals over metro-rail project 

Two foreign contractors for have been assigned the task to construct the metro-rail line-6 between Agarogaon and Motijheel.

To this end, the government on Monday signed two separate deals with the foreign companies at a combine cost of Tk 41.87 billion.

State-owned Dhaka Mass Transport Company Limited (DMTCL) signed a deal of Tk 18.55 billion (package CP 5) with Japanese contractor Takken Corporation and a joint venture of Bangladeshi corporation Abdul Monem Ltd and Japanese Abe Nikko Koygo co Ltd for building the line between Agargaon to Kawran Bazar.

DMTCL also signed another deal of Tk23.32 billion (package CP 6) with Japanese Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co Ltd and a Thai-Italian joint venture company for constructing the metro line between Kawran Bazar to Motijheel.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader were present at the deal signing ceremony.

The minister said the first phase of the MRT line-6 line between Agargaon and Motijheel will be completed by 2020.

Japanese donor Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is bankrolling major portion of the cost (nearly $2.0 billion) for constructing the Tk220 billion (US$2.71 billion) cost project.

Meanwhile, under the CP 3& 4, the Italian-Thai Development Company Ltd is working to build a 10 kilometres MRT line-6 from Uttara to Agargaon.

Under the deal, the foreign contractors will build a 10 kilometre long elevated road and nine viaduct stations between North Uttara and Agargaon.
