Business leaders have called for speedy completion of Patenga Terminal construction work to help ease the container congestion in the Chittagong port.

They also suggested earmarking a specific area in the proposed Bay terminal for containers.

The call came at a meeting of the FBCCI Standing Committee relating to Ministry of Shipping (Maritime Port) on Tuesday, says a press release.

Chairman of the committee Dr Md Pervez Shazzad Akter presided over the meeting held at the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI) auditorium in the city.

He shared the committee's working plan in the meeting.

Mr Akter urged the authorities concerned to expand the toll roads to six lanes and extend the Chittagong port railway lines up to the Bay terminal for smooth transportation of containers.

He also expressed the hope that the authorities concerned, including the Chittagong Port Authority and the Ministry of Railways, would cooperate in easing the container congestion.

The business leaders observed that there is no crisis of lighterage vessel at present.

They underscored the need for upgrading the private jetties at Chottogram Sadarghat into concrete ones.

They also suggested constructing several jetties in Narayanganj BIWTA, which will help ensure smooth loading and unloading of goods.

FBCCI Vice President Md Muntakim Ashraf and directors Nizamuddin Rajesh, Tabarakul Tosaddek Hossain Khan Tito and Hafez Harun also spoke.

Co-chairmen of the committee Ahsanul Haque Chowdhury, Mahbub Chowdhury, Captain Shahed Chowdhury and Shamsuzzaman Rasel participated in the discussion.
