Exports to Pakistan drop

Total exports of Bangladeshi products to Pakistan stood at US$50.54 million in the last fiscal year (FY20), according to Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data.

The amount was 10.30 per cent below the amount of $56.40 million in FY19.

Jute and jute yarn is the major exportable item to Pakistan from Bangladesh.

Again, Pakistan exports to Bangladesh were $791.03 million in 2019, according to the United Nations COMTRADE database on international trade.

Meanwhile, foreign direct investment (FDI) from Pakistan to Bangladesh increased after six years.

Statistics available with Bangladesh Bank showed that the net inflow of FDI from Pakistan stood at $20.34 million in 2019, recording 142 per cent growth over the previous year (2018) when the net inflow of FDI was $8.38 million.

The highest amount of FDI from Pakistan to Bangladesh recorded at $130.79 million in 2014.

Since then, FDI from Pakistan continued to decline until 2018, the statistics showed.

Bangladesh Bank data also showed that the gross inflow of FDI from Pakistan stood at $24.71 million in 2019 while the amount of disinvestment was $4.37 million. 

The stock of FDI from Pakistan stood at $210.70 million at the end of December 2019.

It is to be noted that Pakistan is celebrating the 73rd anniversary of its independence on Friday. The country emerged on the world map on August 14, 1947.
