The Jatiya Sangsad (JS) committee on local government ministry expressed dissatisfaction on Thursday over the activities of the Department of Cooperatives (DOC).
"The cooperative banks are looting people's money with the connivance of some corrupt officials of the government department," the JS body said.
The JS body formed a committee to investigate the alleged corruption of some officers of the department with Saber Hossain Chowdhury as the convener.
The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) has already filed a case against two officials of the Department of Cooperatives.
A sub-committee has also been formed with Saber Hossain Chowdhury as the convener and AKM Mostafizur Rahman and Fazle Hossain Badsha as members to monitor overall activities of the department.
The JS body also expressed resentment and frustration over the failure of the two city corporations to control mosquito menace despite various measures.
The committee also expressed their doubt over the effectiveness of the medicine sprayed for controlling mosquito. The committee suggested test to the medicines.
The committee expressed the resentment at its 20th meeting at the parliament. Committee chairman Abul Hasnat Abdullah, MP chaired the meeting.
Committee sources said the discussion on mosquito hazard in the city came after a Malaysian flight was delayed to take off due to mosquito. The committee warned the city corporations and said that they would announce their next course of action after seeing the progress in mosquito control activities.
Meanwhile, the parliamentary standing committee on commerce ministry suggested on Thursday necessary steps to curb the soaring prices of rods in the domestic market.
The committee also tasked the commerce minister with holding discussion on the issue with the stakeholders to find a way out.
The 26th meeting of the standing committee of Jatiya Sangsad (JS) on the commerce ministry was held at the parliament. Committee chairman Tajul Islam Choudhury chaired the meeting.
The JS body's recommendation came in the backdrop of 'unusual' price surge of rods and other construction materials in recent times.
The committee also suggested strict monitoring of the market of essentials during the ensuing Ramadan.
Committee chairman Tajul Islam told the media that they clearly said that no price hike would be tolerated. The ministry would do whatever needed to control the price.
The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has planned to purchase 2000 tonnes of sugar, 1500 tonnes of lentil, 1.86 million litres of oil, 1955 tonnes of gram, 100 tonnes of date for Ramadan. Gram and lentil from Australia will reach the Chattagram port soon.
TCB will sell the commodities during Ramadan in various divisional and district cities through 187 trucks.
