China has signed a General Contract for construction of two more Russian designed VVER-1200 reactor based nuclear power units at their Xudapu nuclear power plant site. The contract was signed in Moscow recently during the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Russia.
In presence of the Head of States from both the countries, the General Contracts for unit- 3 and unit-4 of Xudapu NPP were signed by the representatives of Atomstroyexport (ASE), Engineering Division Rosatom State Corporation, Russia and the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC).
“Today we have moved construction of Russian-designed NPP at a new site to the practical stage of implementation. Taking into account the previously signed contract for the Tianwan NPP, together with our Chinese partners we have to build four latest Generation III+ power units until 2028”, said Rosatom General Director Alexey Likhachev.
Earlier in March 2019 Russia and China signed General Contract for construction of two VVER -1200 units (unit-7 and unit-8) at the Tianwan plant.
Power Start-ups of Xudapu NPP units No. 3 and No. 4 are scheduled for 2027 and 2028 respectively. Power Start-ups of unit-7 of Tianwan NPP is scheduled for 2026 while that of unit - 8 for 2027.
Contracts formulation was held in line with strategic package of agreements defining key areas for development of cooperation between Russia and China in nuclear energy sector for the coming decades. The strategic package of agreements was signed on June 8, 2018, during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s state visit to China.
Recently India has also signed contract with Russia for VVER-1200 reactor units. Russia is already constructing two nuclear power units based on VVER reactor at Rooppur of Pabna district in Bangladesh.
