CCH to destroy imported goods perishing at port jetties, PCDs
The Chittagong Customs House (CCH) will destroy five types of goods lying at jetties of Chittagong Port and sheds of privately-owned inland container depots (off-dock) as importers did not take delivery of the shipments paying taxes within stipulated time.

The goods include fish feed with fat of pigs, date expired peas, meat, fishes and food items.

Sources said imported in containers from different countries several months ago, the authority after inspection has fixed BL numbers to the containers carrying the goods which means the shipment inside the containers are date expired and damaged.

An official at the customs house said the CCH had earlier issued letters from time to time to importers who imported the goods in the country requesting them to take delivery of their respective consignment within stipulated time from jetties and private container depots (PCD) where the items were perishing as they were lying there for a long time.

"The goods are lying at the port's jetties, yards and PCDs for several months as the importers did not take delivery of the goods despite getting repeated reminders from the authority in the last few months," he stated.

Last week, the CCH sent another letter to the importers, he said. In the letter the CCH wanted to know the reason for their reluctance to take delivery of the goods from the jetties or if there was any legal barrier or objection made by any quarters that prevented them to do so, he added.

When contacted, Assistant Commissioner of CCH Soumen Kanti Chakma said, several containers lying at the jetties with goods including fish feed with fat of pigs, date expired peas, meat, fish, food, etc. which are not fit for consumption or cannot be used now. "So, CCH has decided to destroy the goods. The CCH has taken a preparation to destroy these items. If no case is filed or objection (made by anyone) seven days from issuance of the latest reminder, the CCH will destroy the goods after one week," he added.
