BSCIC to support units involving food, medical equipment

The authorities of BSCIC have decided to provide support to industrial units involved in producing food, manufacturing medical equipment and doing their marketing in the country amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Under the move, the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) directed all concerned officials at its industrial estates to work in coordination with the local administration.

A high official of BSCIC told the FE on Monday that they took the decision in line with the Prime Minister’s 31-point directive to battle the deadly COVID-19 disease.

The official said the directives of BSCIC were given to ensure uninterrupted production of essential items, including food and medicines, by maintaining health safety guidelines.

Earlier on Sunday, the BSCIC said that it has decided to suspend all loan recovery activities for three months following the shutdown of productivity at various industrial units due to the severity of coronavirus infection.

The suspension of loan recovery activities will be applicable for the months of April, May and June.

It is expected to help offset the probable financial losses being incurred by the entrepreneurs due to the government-enforced shutdown.

The BSCIC started its loan providing activities from its own fund to the entrepreneurs of small and cottage industry from the fiscal year 2015-16.

So far, it has disbursed a loan of Tk 330 million.

The rate of loan recovery is around 96 per cent, according to BSCIC.
