BD to demand implementation of previous WTO decisions

Bangladesh will reiterate its demands for implementing previous decisions in the next WTO Ministerial Conference to be held in Argentina this month.

The previous decisions include duty free, quota free market access; service waiver and special and differentiate treatment.

The 11th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC11) is going to be held in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, on December 10-13.

A 28-member delegation led by Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed will attend the MC11.

The minister held a press conference on the eve of the MC11 at his secretariat office in the city on Monday.

“Though US declared that it would not follow in the previous agreements, we will continue our demands and negotiations to implement the decisions taken earlier,” Tofail Ahmed said at the press conference.

One of the important issues that Bangladesh will place in the World Trade Organization (WTO) MC11 is the cross border paperless trade as the country has signed the agreement on August 29 last, the minister said.

The country will take its stance against the illegal, uncontrolled and unregistered fisheries subsidy, he said adding that

Bangladesh will also place its position for strengthening capacity and technical assistance for Least Developed Countries during the transitional period related to this.

International Chamber of Commerce, Bangladesh (ICCB) president Mahbubur Rahman, Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry former president Mir Nasir Hossain, Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) former vice president Md Hatem, among others, were present there.
