BD is the sixth largest importer of textiles

Bangladesh has emerged as the sixth largest importer of textiles across the globe.

According to the latest statistics of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the country’s share in global import of textiles stood at 2.4 per cent in 2016.

The country imported textiles worth $7.15 billion, mostly from China and India, in the last year.

Bangladesh was, however, the fifth largest global importer of textiles in 2015 when the country imported textiles worth $10 billion.

The decline in textile import by Bangladesh is mainly due to slowdown in demand from the industry.

The import value of textiles was $6.8 billion in 2014 and $6.2 billion in 2013.

The World Trade Statistical Review 2017, released by the WTO recently, also showed that European Union (EU) was the largest importer of textiles in last year followed by the United States and China.

Vietnam and Japan ranked as fourth and fifth respectively on importing textiles from the world.

The WTO data also showed that China is the largest exporter of textiles followed by the EU and India.
