Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) has proposed introducing a 5.0 per cent incentive on digital payments with the aim of promoting digital transaction amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Of the incentive, 3.0 per cent will go to merchants and the rest 2.0 per cent to payers, the trade body said in a media statement on Wednesday.

Bangladesh Bank governor Fazle Kabir expressed his strong support for the proposal as BASIS president Syed Almas Kabir placed it while paying an in-person visit to him recently.

The BASIS president believes that this incentive will encourage both merchants and buyers to encourage transactions through digital payments systems.

Meanwhile, the government has announced a low-interest loan assistance package of Tk 200 billion for small and medium enterprises to overcome the business recession during the pandemic.

On the package, the BB again launched a credit guarantee scheme, read the BASIS statement welcoming the move.

BASIS urged the BB governor to continue the credit guarantee scheme for the software and IT sector even after the coronavirus situation improves as businesses in the sector couldn't avail unsecured loan facility.
