BTMA proposes forming committee on fixing fair gas, power tariffs

Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) has proposed that the government should form a committee comprising of representatives from and experts on the related sectors instead of relying on mass hearing only for fixing fair gas and electricity tariffs.

The primary textile sector leaders also urged that it should be specified how long the enhanced rate would be applicable, in absence of which they said at a views exchange meeting that the usual growth of industry is hampered.

BTMA president Tapan Chowdhury said, “We believe that it is necessary to fix an acceptable tariff rate for gas and electricity along with giving connection to the industry.”

There are many entrepreneurs who are discouraged from making investment mainly because of uncertainty over gas and electricity, he said.

BTMA organised the meeting at its office in Dhaka city with its members on gas, electricity and energy sector, with Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury advisor to the Prime Minister on energy, power and mineral resources being present as chief guest.

Abul Mansur Md Faizullah, chairman of Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation, widely known as Petrobangla, was also present.
