Atgharia brinjal growers get fair prices

PABNA, Nov 23: Farmers of Atghoria upazila have achieved a bumper production of brijal this year. They are also delighted for getting fair prices of their produce. The vegetable has great demand among customers, and its cultivation has proved benefiting for the growers.

According to Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) of Atghoria upazila, the target of brinjal cultivation was set at 1,020 hectares of land, but around 870 hectares of land under the all unions and one municipality in the upazila have been brought under its cultivation.

The brijal which is produced here is sent to different districts including the capital everyday after meeting the local demand, sources added.

While talking with the FE, Anisur Rahman, a brinjal grower of Sara village, said he cultivated brijal on around two bighas of land this year and got more profit than the previous year. He would cultivate brinjal in the next year, he hoped.

Fokrul Islam, a farmer of Ekdanta village, said he cultivated brinjal on one bigha of land this year and got bumper production. In this connection he had to spend less, and now, he has become self-reliant.

Per maund of brinjal was sold at Tk 1,200 to 1,300 in locals markets in the previous year, but now the amount is being sold at Tk 1,600 to Tk 1,800, he added.

In this way, farmer Saidul Islam and Liton Mollah of Chadva village cultivated binjal on around 15 kathas and on two bighas of land respectively.

Similarly, Aynul Islam, Shafiqul Islam, Anwar Ali Master and some others farmers cultivated brijal and became benefited this year.

Proshanta Kumar Sarkar, Atghoria upazila agriculture officer, said the farmers have become very interested in cultivating brinjal in their lands as they got bumper yield of the produce this year.

The current demand of brinal here and in other parts of the country is being met with the local brinjal, he added.

Meanwhile, our Naogaon correspondent adds: Farmers in Atrai upazila of the district are passing busy days with the cultivation of winter vegetables.

After a recent visit in the upazila, it was found that the famers are working in the vegetable fields from morning till evening.

Peasants rise early in the morning, prepare the land, sow seeds, clean the weeds and water the plants.

Most of the farmers are cultivating cauliflower, cabbage, radish, snake gourd, bitter gourd and spinach.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said farmers in the upazila have already cultivated winter vegetables on around 1,500 hectares of land till this week.

More 1,000 hectares land would be brought under vegetable farming within next three to four weeks, the sources added.

One Jalal Uddin of village Magurapara under the upazila said he cultivated cauliflower on two bighas of land this season. He is expecting a bumper yield and good price of the product.

Upazila agriculture officer KM Kausar Hosaain stated modern technology is being applied in the upazila to cultivate vegetables.

The agriculture officials are assisting the farmers by giving them necessary  training in this regard.
