Agricultural mechanisation vital to ensure food security

Agricultural mechanisation is important to ensure food security in Bangladesh, discussants have said at an opinion meeting in Dhaka.

They observed that the country's population is increasing and agro-based labourers are migrating to other professions. On the other hand, they said, youths are not interested in agriculture.

"So to ensure our food security it is very important to mechanise our agriculture," they told the meeting, organised by Metal (Pvt.) Limited, an agricultural machinery business company, held at a hotel in Gulshan recently, says a statement.

Agricultural professionals, development partners and bankers attended and spoke at the meeting on "Metal (Pvt.) Limited's role in agricultural mechanisation in Bangladesh: Explore the road ahead".

The statement said, through the event Metal shared their experiences in agricultural mechanisation in Bangladesh and cooperation they received from different organisations and how that could be explored in the future.

Sadid Jamil, Managing Director of Metal delivered the inaugural speech at the meeting where Chairman of Metal Engineer Aminul Islam was present.

The discussant were: Professor Dr. MosharrafHossain, Dean, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering & Technology, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Anar Khalil, Senior Agriculture Private Sector Advisor, The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Michael Field, Chief of Party (CoP), Agricultural Value Chains (AVC) Project, David Timothy Russell, Chief of Party (CoP), Rice and Diversified Crop (RDC) Project, Agricultural Cooperative Development International and Volunteers in Overseas Cooperative Assistance (ACDI-VOCA), and Country Director of International Development Enterprise (iDE)-Bangladesh Deepak Khadka.
