Skill for Employment Investment Programme (SEIP) implementation update

The Skill for Employment Investment Programme (SEIP) project has imparted training to some 24,510 trainees in IT-related fields till April, 2019 with as much as 61 per cent placement in the country's job market.

The government is implementing SEIP, one of the largest programmes in the field of Information Technology (IT) in Bangladesh with financial supports from Asian Development Bank.

In the first phase of the SEIP project, a total of 23000 people were trained between April 2015 to December 2018 with 65 per cent of job placement. And, in the second phase of the project the target is finalised to provide training to some 6,570 people.

The Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) is conducting the IT related training to produce skilled human resources for the sector.

"There are huge gap of skilled manpower in the sector and the government already declared it a thrust sector in the country," Coordinator of Monitoring and Evaluation of SEIP Md. Tarique Quader told the FE.

BASIS-SEIP project has successfully enrolled 25,074 trainees till April 2019 as per the Business Plan target, he added.

"Among those enrolled trainees, 24,510 trainees were certified after successfully completion of their training under this project. A total of 15,054 graduate trainees are currently doing job. Percentage of job placement is currently 61.0 per cent," he further added.

The post-training job placement is considered to be a significant outcome of the project, insiders said adding that the most of the trainees of BASIS-SEIP project are graduated from different public and private universities.

Although job placement achievement as per the collected information is 65 per cent in the first phase but it is obvious that all of the graduate trainees will enter in the job market today or tomorrow, trained people said.

It the meantime, "SEIP authority and Bangladesh government have decided to extend this project up to the year 2023. Therefore, the preparation of new business plan for the duration 2020-2023 has been going on," BASIS official and SEIP Chief Coordinator Talukder Sabbir told the FE.

Meanwhile, Azmiree Rahman took part in a training programme on Customer Support and Services under SEIP project in 2015. Immediately after completion of the training, she joined in an E-commerce company as a customer support executive. Later, she moved to an online market portal as senior official.

Fahim Shahriar, another participant was trained on Web Application Development Dot Net in BASIS-SEIP project in 2018. He is currently employed in an IT firm.

They, among many others, are dreaming to become programmers and launch e-commerce businesses.
