The Income Tax Week-2017 began across the country on Friday to provide tax-related services and help the taxpayers to have their returns filed without any hassle.

Aiming to collect more taxes, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) organised the weeklong event after successfully holding the 'Income Tax Fair-2017' and the 'Decentralised Income Tax Fair' recently.

Senior Secretary Dr Md Mozammel Haque Khan of the Public Administration Ministry inaugurated the second edition of the tax week on the Kendriyo Kochi Kachar Mela premises at Segunbagicha in the city.

NBR Chairman Md Nojibur Rahman presided over the opening ceremony attended by NBR member (tax administration and human resource management) Abdur Razzak and Tax Zone-4 commissioner Radheshyam Roy.

Referring to the close link between development and tax management, Dr Mozammel Khan said no country can make progress without modernising its tax management strategies.

A civilised and democratic country increases its resources through taxation and use them for the welfare of its citizens, he added.

Stressing the need for bringing more people under income-tax net, the senior secretary said that although the number of taxpayers is increasing every year, a good number of taxable people are still outside the tax net.

Speaking on the occasion, NBR chairman Nojibur Rahman said the Income Tax Week will be successful if the taxpayers can submit their tax returns in an excellent atmosphere with a smiling face.

NBR is working hard so that the taxpayers could say that this year's fair management is better than in the previous year, he added.

To this end, the revenue authority has arranged a competition among the tax zones so that the tax officials feel more encouraged to create a comfortable environment for taxpayers, he said.

Mr Rahman hoped that around 1.9 million taxpayers will submit returns this year.

The Income Tax Week is being observed at the field-level circle offices of the revenue authority under its 31 tax zones across the country.

Taxpayers can submit their tax returns to respective tax collection offices from 9:00am to 5:00pm daily. The tax week ends on November 30.
