The benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index rose 0.4 per cent or 31.99 points to finish the session at 8,396.43.

Heavyweight a2 Milk Company Ltd climbing 1.5 per cent, while Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Corporation Ltd rose 1.0 per cent to a record close.
