Year’s last trading session end higher

Stocks end year on positive note

The last trading session on both bourses closed higher on Thursday as investors continued their buying appetite on selective large-cap stocks.

Market insiders said investors were active on banking sector stocks amid optimism as it was the last trading session of 2017.

The market started the day with positive movement and the upward trend sustained till end of the session with no sign of reversal, finally ended 58 points higher.

DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), went up by 58.05 points or 0.94 per cent to finish the year at 6,244.

The two other indices also closed higher. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, rose 21.84 points or 0.96 per cent to 2,283. The DSE Shariah Index (DSES) advanced 11.07 points or 0.80 per cent to 1,390.

The market turnover got some boost after experiencing drought in the last few sessions and reached to Tk 6.28 billion, which was 12 per cent than the previous day’s turnover of Tk 5.52 billion.

The gainers took a strong lead over the losers as out of 336 issues traded, 237 closed higher, 64 closed lower and 35 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

Lafarge topped the day’s turnover chart with 4.39 million shares of Tk 306 million changing hands, followed by Islami bank, Square Pharmaceuticals, National Bank and Paramount Textile.

Prime Bank 1st ICB Mutual Fund was the day’s best performer, posting a gain of 5.71 per cent while Emerald Oil Industries was the day’s worst loser, shedding 6.18 per cent.

The port city bourse also edged higher with CSE All Shares Price Index of – advancing 145 points to finish at 19,268.

The Selective Categories Index of the port city bourse -- CSCX – also gained 87 points to settle at 11,649.

Gainers beat losers as 160 issues closed higher, 61 closed lower and 25 remained unchanged on the CSE.

The port city bourse traded 57.37 million shares and mutual fund units worth Tk 1.81 billion in turnover.
