Stocks extended the losing streak for the fourth straight session on Thursday as investors mostly remained watchful amid ongoing virus fears.
The market opened on a downward trend and continued the trend till the end as the shaky investors liquidated their holdings from most of the major sectors.
At the end of the session, DSEX, the key index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange, went down by 9.95 points or 0.24 per cent to settle at 4,069.
Market analysts said cautious investors continued their profit booking sell-offs as many investors remained worried about the adverse impact of the pandemic on the macro-economic indicators of the country.
Investors remained cautious and defensive in their investment approach amid gradual reopening of the economy, said a leading broker.
Two other indices also ended lower. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, lost 6.32 points to finish at 1,368 and the DSE Shariah Index shed 4.41 points to close at 945.
Turnover, another important indicator of the market, came down to Tk 2.26 billion on the country’s prime bourse, which was more than 15 per cent lower than the previous day’s turnover of Tk 2.68 billion.
Most of the shares remained stuck at the trading. Of the issues traded, 197 remained unchanged while 58 issues advanced and 74 declined on the DSE floor.
A total number of 55,335 trades were executed in the day’s trading session with a trading volume of 71.10 million shares and mutual fund units.
The market-cap on the premier bourse also fell to Tk 3,154 billion on Thursday, from Tk 3,158 billion in the previous session as blue-chip stocks edged higher.
Beximco Pharma topped the turnover chart with shares worth Tk 147 million changing hands, closely followed by Genex Infoyos, Islami Bank, GP and Indo-Bangla Pharma.
Eastern Insurance was the day’s best performer, posting a gain of 9.90 per cent while Dacca Dyeing was the worst loser, losing 5.0 per cent.
The Chittagong Stock Exchange also ended lower with its All Shares Price Index (CASPI)—losing 44 points to close at 11,559 and the Selective Categories Index - CSCX –falling 26 points to finish at 7,007.
Of the issues traded, 40 gained, 57 declined and 81 remained unchanged on the CSE.
The port city bourse traded 3.13 million shares and mutual fund units with a turnover value of Tk 80 million.
