Stocks fail to stay positive after midday

Stocks failed to stay positive trend at midday on Tuesday as cautious investors went on selling spree amid lower than expected earnings declaration of some companies.

Some 30 listed companies disclosed their un-audited second quarter (Q2) earnings for October-December period of 2017 on Tuesday. Of them, earnings of 15 companies declined while 15 increased in October-December quarter of 2017 compared to the same quarter in the previous year.

Following the previous day’s positive note, the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) witnessed upturn amid low trading activities.

Within first 15 minutes of trading, the key index of the country’s prime bourse advanced more than 23 points while the CSE All Share Price Index (CAPSI) of port city’s bourse gained 14 points at 10:45am.

After 30 minutes of trading, the key index of the DSE gained more than 28 points while the CSE All Share Price Index (CAPSI) rose 30 points at 11:00am.

After first two hours of trading, DSEX went down by more than 14 points while the CSE All Shares Price Index lost 66 points at 12:30pm when the report was filed.

DSEX, the prime index of the DSE, stands at 6,161 points, losing 14.89 points or 0.24 per cent at 12:30pm.

The other indices also saw downturn trend till then. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips fell 13.42 points or 0.58 per cent to reach at 2,280 points.

The DSE Shariah Index (DSES) also lost 6.20 points or 0.43 per cent to reach at 1,419.

Turnover, the crucial indicator of the market, stands at BDT 1.91 billion, when the report was filed at 12:30pm.

Grameemphone was the most traded stocks till then with shares worth Tk 235 million changing hands, followed by Aamra Networks Tk 65 million, Nahee Aluminum Tk 63 million, City Bank Tk 53 million and BD Finance Tk 53 million.

Of the issues traded till then, 132 advanced, 122 declined and 62 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

The port city bourse, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), also saw downturn till then with CSE All Shares Price Index of port city’s bourse – shedding 66 points to stand at 18,977 points, also at 12:30pm.

The Selective Categories Index of the port city bourse also lost 39 points to reach at 11,462 points.

Of the issues traded till then, 66 gained, 69 declined and 27 issues remained unchanged with BDT 75 million in turnover.
