Stocks extended the winning streak for the third straight session with a rising turnover on Thursday as investors put fresh stakes on bank issues based on the latest quarterly earnings.
Following the previous day’s modest rise, the Dhaka Stock Exchange opened on an optimistic note and ended higher despite some volatility in the early trading.
At the end of the session, DSEX, the benchmark index of the DSE, went up by 50.46 points or 0.72 per cent to settle at 7,062.
However, two other indices edged lower. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, fell 5.42 points to finish at 2,638 and the DSES (Shariah) index dropped 2.04 points to close at 1,479.
Turnover, another important indicator of the market, however, jumped to Tk 17.24 billion on the prime bourse, which was 15 per cent higher than the previous day’s tally of Tk 14.97 billion.
Gainers took a strong lead over the losers as out of 375 issues traded, 223 closed higher, 131 lower and 21 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.
A total number of 252,512 trades were executed in the day’s trading session with a trading volume of 449.51 million securities.
The market cap of DSE also increased to Tk 5,634 billion which was Tk 5,633 billion in the previous day.
Beximco topped the turnover list with shares worth Tk 1.74 billion changing hands, closely followed by IFIC Bank (Tk 995 million), Makson Spinning Mills (Tk 703 million), Orion Pharma (Tk 561 million) and Saif Powertec (Tk 550 million).
Hamid Fabrics was the day’s best performer, posting a gain of 67.21 per cent following its corporate declaration. The company has recommended a 5.0 per cent cash dividend for general shareholders only for the year ended on June 30, 2021.
However, Hamid Fabric has reported a loss of Tk 1.76 per share for the year ended on June 30, 2021, as against a profit of Tk 0.42 for the same period of the previous year.
Oimex Electrode was the day’s worst loser, shedding 11.89 per cent.
The port city bourse CSE also ended higher with the CSE All Share Price Index – CASPI – soaring 175 points to settle at 20,628 points and Selective Categories Index – CSCX – advancing 107 points to finish at 12,392 points.
Here too, the gainers beat the losers as 191 issues gained, 85 declined and 22 remained unchanged.
The port city bourse traded 22.18 million shares and mutual fund units worth nearly Tk 637 million in turnover.
