Stocks ended higher on Monday, the first session after three-day Eid holidays, as investors continued their buying spree on sector-wise stocks.
Market insiders said the stocks extended their winning spell for the seventh straight sessions which started before Eid vacation, as the optimistic investors remained active on large-cap stocks.
However, the presence of the investors was thin on the trading floor as many investors are yet to resume businesses in Dhaka after enjoying Eid holidays in rural areas while many of them executed trade over phone.
Trading on the bourses remained closed from September 1 to September 3 on the occasion of Holy Eid-ul-Azha, including weekly holidays.
After crossing the 6,000-mark of the prime index of the major bourse before Eid holidays, the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) opened higher today.
Within the first 30 minutes of trading, DSEX, the core index of the major bourse advanced nearly 15 points while the Selective Category Index of the port city bourse gained 25 points at 11:00am.
The twin-bourse sustained the positive trend till close of the day’s trading, finally DSEX, the core index of the DSE, ending nearly 32 points higher.
At the end of the session, DSEX settled at more than 6,038 points, after advancing 31.94 points or 0.53 per cent over the last trading session.
The market remained higher for the 7 consecutive sessions and DSEX added nearly 183 points.
The market activities, however, fell with total turnover on DSE amounting to Tk 6.67 billion, which was 22 per cent lower than the previous trading day’s Tk 8.53 billion.
The gainers took a strong lead over the losers as out of 329 issues traded, 181 closed higher, 104 lower and 44 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.
LankaBangla Finance topped the day’s turnover chart with shares of Tk 567 million changing hands, followed by Fortune Shoes, Fu-Wang Ceramic, BBS Cables and C&A Textile.
Standard Ceramic was the day’s best performer, posting a gain of 9.96 per cent while SEML Lecture Equity Management Fund was the day’s worst loser, plunging 7.92 per cent.
The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also closed higher with its Selective Categories Index - CSCX - gaining 76 points to close at 11,318 points.
Gainers beat losers as 135 issues closed higher, 68 lower and 27 remained unchanged on the CSE.
The port city bourse traded 14.53 million shares and mutual fund units worth more than BDT 397 million in turnover.
