Speakers at a seminar on Monday stressed the need for listing more companies having good fundamentals with the country's stock exchanges to enhance the depth of the capital market.

They also laid emphasis on investors' awareness and increased participation of institutional investors for further growth of the capital market and the economy.

Central Depository Bangladesh Limited (CDBL) organised the seminar titled 'Investment Education and Investors' Protection' as part of the World Investors Week 2018.

Professor Helal Uddin Nizami, a BSEC commissioner, was the chief guest of the seminar held at University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) in the capital. ULAB students and faculty members were present.

"Many companies are not willing to be listed with the stock exchanges due to wrong perception of the sponsors. The wrong perception should be removed," Nizami said.

He said the country's economy witnessed a tremendous growth, but the capital market expanded not commensurate with the economic growth.

"The number of retail investors is higher than that of the institutional investors. So, the retail investors must have knowledge about the securities rules and regulations to ensure safety of their investments," Nizami said.

He also laid emphasis on more participation of institutional investors to accelerate the growth of the capital market and the economy.

Another BSEC commissioner Khondoker Kamaluzzaman requested the investors to refrain from unlawful investments.

"Investors must be aware of the securities rules to ensure safety of their investments," he said.

Shuvra Kanti Choudhury, Managing Director and CEO of Central Depository Bangladesh Limited (CDBL), stressed the importance of investors' awareness and financial literacy.

"Investors will not be able to ensure their investment safety without financial literacy," he said.

Imran Rahman, a professor at business school of the ULAB, presented the keynote paper at the seminar, chaired by CDBL Director A. K. Abdul Momen.
