Lafarge share helps markets to higher open

Stocks open higher as Lafarge jumps

Stocks on both bourses witnessed upward trend in early hour of trading Wednesday as optimistic investors are showing their buying appetite on selective large-cap issues, especially Lafarge Surma Cement.

Lafarge Surma featured a turnover of Tk 801 million within first 30 minutes of trading. The company’s share trading between Tk 69 and Tk 72.10 till 11:00am on the Dhaka bourse.

Investors grabbed Lafarge’s share following the news that the company finally agreed to buy Holcim Bangladesh at around Tk 5.04 billion, a price that was previously set by the Bangladesh Bank.

Following the previous day’s positive note, the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) opened in higher trend with rising trading activities.

Within first 15 minutes of trading, the key index of the country’s prime bourse advanced more than 13 points while the CSE All Shares Price Index (CAPSI) of port city bourse rose 34 points at 10:45am.

After first 30 minutes of trading, the key index advanced more than 17 points while the CSE All Shares Price Index (CAPSI) of port city bourse rose 21 points at 11:00am, when the report was filed.

DSEX, the prime index of the DSE, went up by 17.30 points or 0.25 per cent to reach at 6,185 points, when the report was filed at 11:00am.

The two other indices also saw positive trend till then. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips advanced 9.15 points or 0.41 per cent to reach at 2,254.

The DSE Shariah Index (DSES) also gained 5.62 points or 0.40 per cent to stand at 1,377.

Turnover, the important indicator of the market, stood at Tk 1.34 billion when the report was filed at 11:00am, riding on Lafarge Surma Cement.

Lafarge Surma Cement was the most traded stocks till then with shares worth Tk 801 million changing hands, closely followed by Paramount Textile Tk 41 million, Nahee Aluminum Tk 40 million, Alif Manufacturing Company Tk 24 million and Pharma Aids Tk 23 million.

Of the issues traded till then, 111 nudged higher, 87 declined and 66 remained unchanged.

The port city bourse also saw upward trend till then with its All Shares Price Index, CAPSI –advancing 21 points to stand at 19,105, also at 11:00am.

The Selective Categories Index of CSE also gained 14 points to reach at 11,550 points till then.

Of the issues traded till then, 34 gained, 49 declined and 19 issues remained unchanged with Tk 99 million in turnover.
