Stocks keep gaining for two straight sessions

Stocks extended their gaining streak for the two straight sessions on Thursday as some investors continued their appetite on sector-wise shares.

DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), went up by 30.95 points or 0.60 per cent to settle at 5,169.

Market analysts said most of the investors continued their buying binge on sector specific shares based on earnings declarations.

The news that earnings per share (EPS) of most of the listed banks increased in first half (H1) of January-June 2019 period compared to the same period of the previous year, also prompted some investors to the market.

Two other indices also closed higher. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, advanced 10.59 points to finish at 1,838 and the DSES (Shariah) index gained 10.98 points to settle at 1,192.

Turnover, another important indicator of the market, stood at Tk 4.81 billion, which was 7.36 per cent higher than the previous day’s turnover of Tk 4.47 billion.

A total number of 134,114 trades were executed in the day’s trading session with trading volume of 142.24 million shares and mutual fund units.

The market-cap of the DSE also rose to Tk 3,861 billion on Thursday, from Tk 3,834 billion in the previous day.

The gainers took a strong lead over the losers as out of 353 issues traded, 218 closed higher, 83 ended lower and 52 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

Fortune Shoes topped the turnover chart with 4.64 million shares worth Tk 196 million changing hands.

The other turnover leaders were Bangladesh Shipping Corporation, Monno Ceramic, United Power and Genex Infosys.

Monno Ceramic was the day’s best performer, posting a gain of 9.95 per cent while SEML FBSL Growth Fund was the day’s worst loser, slumping by 10 per cent.

The port city bourse, the Chittagong Stock Exchange, also ended higher with the CSE All Share Price Index – CASPI – advancing 73 points to settle at 15,798 while the Selective Categories Index – CSCX –gaining 45 points to finish at 9,604.

Here too, the gainers beat the losers as 158 issues ended higher, 77 closed lower and 32 remained unchanged.

The port city bourse traded 5.56 million shares and mutual fund units worth nearly Tk 168 million in turnover.
