Stocks extend losing streak for fifth day

The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) ended marginally lower on Wednesday, extending the losing streak for fifth days.

Market insiders said investors went on the selling spree of sector-wise large-cap stocks.

The markets started the day on positive note, but around 12:00pm both the bourses slipped into a negative territory, and the slide continued till the end of the session.

DSEX, prime index of the DSE, slipped 26.08 points or 0.42 per cent to close at 6,172.

Two other indices of the premier bourse also fell. Of those, DS30 index, comprising blue chips, lost 9.28 points or 0.41 per cent to close at 2,253 and Shariah Index (DSES) lost 3.44 points or 0.24 per cent to finish at 1,387.

Turnover, an important indicator of the market, stood at Tk 4.39 billion, which was 2.00 per cent lower than the previous day’s turnover of Tk 4.48 billion.

The losers took a marginal lead over the gainers as out of 335 issues traded, 189 issues closed lower, 104 closed higher and 42 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

The port city bourse also ended lower with CSE All Shares Price Index of – losing 71 points to finish at 19,105 and Selective Categories Index of the port city bourse -- CSCX – falling 47 points to settle at 11,539.

Here the losers also beat the gainers as 146 issues closed lower, 59 closed higher and 31 issues remained unchanged on the CSE.

The port city bourse traded 8.01 million shares and mutual fund units worth Tk 315 million in turnover.
