Stocks witnessed marginal gain on Tuesday after volatile trading as investors were active both sides of trading fence amid ongoing earnings and dividend declaration session.
Brokers said the optimistic investors showed their buying appetite on some large-cap shares while cautious investors sold sector-wise issues, helping the key index above 6,000-mark once again.
The market witnessed extreme volatility in the first hour of trading. But rest of the session went up steadily, finally ended more than 23 points higher.
DSEX, the core index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) settled at 6,019 points, after advancing 23.34 points or 0.38 per cent over the previous session.
The two other indices also edged higher. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips advanced 5.22 points or 0.24 per cent to finish at 2,168. The DSE Shariah Index (DSES) rose 5.72 points or 0.43 per cent to close at 1,316.
The trading activities remained low as total turnover on DSE amounting to Tk 5.37 billion, which was 5.29 per cent higher than the previous day’s Tk 5.10 billion.
A total number of 0.110 million trades were executed in the day’s trading session with trading volume of 157.84 million securities.
The total market capitalisation of the DSE stood at Tk 4,090 billion, against Tk 4,076 billion in the previous session.
The gainers took a strong lead over the losers as out of 330 issues traded, 198 closed higher, 93 closed lower and 39 remained unchanged on the DSE floor.
LankaBangla Finance emerged as turnover leader with about 4.89 million shares of Tk 314 million changing hands, followed by BBS Cables, Brac Bank, Aamra Networks and City Bank.
Salvo Chemicals was the highest gainer for the two consecutive sessions, posting a 9.17 per cent gain, while Social Islami Bank was the worst loser, plunging by 7.67 per cent following the news of its major changes in its board and top management.
The port city bourse, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), also edged higher with its Selective Categories Index - CSCX – advancing by 43 points to settle at 11,272.
Gainers beat losers as 154 issues closed higher, 65 closed lower and 19 remained unchanged on the CSE.
The port city bourse traded 15.98 million shares and mutual fund units’ worth Tk 657 million in turnover.
