BSEC moves cheer up stocks

Stocks ended higher for the two straight sessions on Thursday as investors showed their buying spree on sector-wise stocks amid positive expectation.

Market analysts said the securities regulator’s market supportive measures, the Prime Minister’s assurance, coupled with National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman’s positive remarks cheer up stocks prices.

The market opened on positive note and the upward trend continued until end of the session with no sign of reversal.

At the end of the session, DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), went up by nearly 84 points or 1.61 per cent to settle at 5,286.

Two other indices also ended higher. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, advanced 23.90 points to finish at 1,870 and the DSE Shariah Index rose 19.82 points to close at 1,224.

Turnover, another important indicator of the market, also increased to Tk 4.75, which was 14 per cent higher than the previous day’s turnover of Tk 4.15 billion.

The gainers took a strong lead over the losers as out of 348 issues traded, 275 advanced, 49 declined and 24 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

A total number of 125,590 trades were executed in the day’s trading session with trading volume of 131.81 million securities.

The market capitalisation of the DSE also rose to Tk 3,888 billion on Thursday, from Tk 3,839 billion in the previous day.

United Power topped the turnover chart with 889,915 shares worth nearly Tk 273 million changing hands.

The other turnover leaders were Fortune Shoes, Monno Ceramic, Grameenphone and National Polymer.

Genex Infosys was the day’s best performer, posting a gain of 9.83 per cent while AB Bank was the worst loser, losing 8.33 per cent following its No dividend recommendation for the year ended on December 31, 2018.

The port city bourse, Chittagong Stock Exchange, also ended higher with its CSE All Share Price Index – CASPI –soaring 248 points to settle at 16,160 and the Selective Categories Index - CSCX –rising 154 points to finish at 9,783.

Here too, the gainers beat losers, as 194 issues closed higher, 32 ended lower and 11 remained unchanged on the CSE trading floor.

The port city bourse traded 8.48 million shares and mutual fund units worth Tk 219 million in turnover.
