CHATTOGRAM, Oct 25 (UNB): Young Elephants Football Club of Laos brightened their chances for the semifinal at the third edition Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup Football Tournament, eliminating TC Sports Club of Maldives on Friday.
Their 2-1 goals victory came in their third and last match of Group A at the MA Aziz Stadium here.
Young Elephants FC are now sharing the top slot of the four-team group along with hosts Chattogram Abahani Limited with 6 points while Mohun Bagan Athletic Club of India are in the second position with 3 points. TC Sports Club have been eliminated.
Midfielder and captain Bounphachan Bounkong netted twice for Young Elephants FC while midfielder Mohamed Samir scored one goal for TC Sports Club.
In the 17th minute, Bounkong opened the account with a left-footer grounder shot from the danger zone utilising a short pass by Vanna Bounlovongsa (1-0). Young Elephants continued their domination over TC Sports Club with attacking football throughout the first half.
Defending Champions TC Sports Club got another blow while Bounkong doubled the margin with a right-footer grounder in the 70th minute (2-0).
After conceding two goals, the Maldivian club came alive and created some close chances from counter-attack.
Mohamed Samir finally scored for TC Sports Club with his left-footer grounder shot inside the box, off a short pass from forward Ismail Easa (2-1) in the 78th minute.
Earlier, Young Elephants FC started their campaign beating Mohun Bagan AC by 2-1 goals in their first match, but were defeated by 2-4 goals by former champions Chattogram Abahani Ltd in their second match.
On the other hand, TC Sports Club conceded the first defeat to Chattogram Abahani Ltd by 1-4 goals and the second defeat to Mohun Bagan AC by 0-2 goals.
