Tigers bundled out for 143 as Zimbabwe take lead

Bangladesh stumbled to 143 in their first innings during the Sylhet Test against Zimbabwe on Sunday.

They now trail visiting Zimbabwe by 140, reports bdnews24.com.

The Tigers lost Imrul Kayes, Liton Das, Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Mahmudullah early on in the innings as Zimbabwe attempted to work their way back into the game.

Tendai Chatara picked up the wickets of Liton, Shanto, and Mahmudullah while Kyle Jarvis bowled out Imrul.

Mominul Haque edged a delivery from Sikandar Raza to Zimbabwe captain Hamilton Masakadza after he and Mushfiqur Rahim (31) attempted to rebuild from the poor start.

Mushfiq was then dismissed on 31 by a returning Kyle Jarvis.

Ariful Haque attempted to put up a fight, scoring 41*, but ran out of partners at the other end.

A miscommunication with Abu Jayed brought the Tigers' innings to a close with a run-out.

Chatara and Raza were the leading wicket-takers for the visitors, nabbing three each. Jarvis picked up a couple, while Sean Williams took one.

ZIMBABWE'S FIRST INNINGS

Taijul Islam has taken six wickets as Bangladesh closed out Zimbabwe’s first innings for 282 on the second day of the Test.

Taijul Islam picked up the wicket of Regis Chakabva soon after the start of play to give the Tigers a breakthrough and struck again in the 110th over to dismiss debutant Wellington Masakadza.

He also took out Kyle Jarvis and Tendai Chatara on consecutive deliveries to halt the visitors at 282.

Nazmul Islam picked up his second Test wicket, catching Brandon Mavuta in front of the stumps.

Zimbabwe's Peter Moor battled his way to a 66*, but was left holding the bag by the quick fall of wickets at the other end.

FIRST DAY

The first day’s play saw the visitors win the toss and choose to bat before posting 238/5 in 91 overs.

Zimbabwean Captain Hamilton Masakadza and batsman Sean Williams scored half-centuries at the crease on Saturday, but the pressure was also kept up by Bangladesh’s bowlers, who broke up partnerships as they began to gather steam.

Taijul Islam was also the most successful of the bowling attack on the first day, taking the wickets of Brian Chari and Brendan Taylor early on.

Taylor, who has been one of Zimbabwe’s highest scorers, was dismissed after a superb catch by Nazmul Hossain Shanto.

Williams, who scored an 88, was looking set at the crease when he was dismissed by Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah in a breakthrough for Bangladesh.

But, before the Tigers could capitalise, Peter Moor and wicketkeeper Regis Chakabva built a steady and stubborn partnership that saw out the first day’s play.

Nazmul Islam picked up his maiden Test wicket on Saturday. Abu Jayed also took one wicket.
