Since the takeover by Saudi Arabian owners, Newcastle fans should see their ambitions rise. The bankroll of their new owners permits them to do so.
But after half of the season, it is now a question of whether their situation permits them to do the same or not.
With approximately 83 per cent of premier league clubs’ total wealth and the capacity to spend around 800 million on transfers in the next 4 years, the expectations are bound to rise.
They have also done quite a bit in that regard. Already hiring Eddie Howe as their head coach was their first step to revamp.
Along with that, they recruited striker Chris Wood from Burnley and right-back KieranTrippier from Atletico Madrid to bolster their squad.
They are also linked with plenty. As per Transfermarkt, there have been 35 rumours regarding Newcastle United in this summer transfer window.
Bruno Guimares is also expected to join Newcastle soon. It would not be of any wonder if they manage to sign 2-3 more players in the remaining few days of this transfer window.
As of now, it is safe to say that they are going in the right direction. Yet, there are certain concerns with them.
First things first, having money is one thing but spending it properly is a different ball game. Everton is one of the most recent examples of facing this problem.
Another thing is that you can buy a bunch of players. But it takes time to function them and create a team out of it properly.
The players they recruited and those who are linked in the winter definitely will better their squad. They will also be able to attract more players to join them in the coming summer window, which is supposed to make their squad better.
But then comes the question about the real crisis. Do they have time to wait till summer?
Newcastle are currently in the 18th position in Premier League with a measly 15 points from 21 games. Both theoretically and practically, they are in the relegation zone.
But this number doesn’t properly showcase how deep in a mess they are right now.
If we look at their competitors in the relegation battle, we will find Burnley at the bottom of the table, who are only 3 points behind them but have played 3 games less than them as well.
Then we have Watford who are trailing by 1 point with 1 game less played.
Norwich is 1 point above them but they have played 1 more game than Newcastle. Everton is already 4 points above them with 1 game less played.
Basically, Newcastle finds themselves at the absolute bottom of the table and they are easily one of the favourites to be relegated this year. And missing the top-flight football will surely not let them make a strong squad in the coming summer window.
Another fact is that big investment can’t change a club overnight. It takes time to build on a system. If we consider the last two such major takeovers, Chelsea won the premier league after 3 years of Roman Abramovich. Manchester City needed 4 years after Sheikh Mansoor took over.
This proves how difficult a task it is for Newcastle. Going down to the 2nd division will make things difficult for them. Even the owners might lose interest and sell their shares.
There are tough times ahead for Newcastle. It is time to see how efficiently they can handle it.
