Defending champions Dhaka Mariner Young's Club finished 2nd in the first phase of the 12-team Green Delta Insurance Metropolis Premier Division Hockey League, reports UNB.

They beat their rivals Dhaka Abahani Limited by 5-1 goals in a vital match at the Maulana Bhashani Hockey Stadium in the city on Tuesday.

With the victory, Dhaka Mariner Young's Club clinched the 2nd slot securing 30 points from 11 matches forcing Abahani Limited to the 3rd place with 27 points from all 11 first phase matches.

Dhaka Mohammedan SC dominated the league after first phase with all-win record securing 33 points from 11 ties.

All the three teams have already confirmed their berth in the five-team super league.

In the day's match, Mohammad Julhairy put Mariner's ahead in the 23rd minute from a penalty corner (1-0), national forward Moinul Islam Kaushik doubled the margin in the 29th minute by a field goal (2-0). Baljit Singh scored a field goal in the 29th minute (2-1).

Later, Moinul Islam Kaushik, Pushkar Khisha Memo and Naimuddin scored three more goals enabling Mariner Young's Club to earn a convincing win.

In the day's other match. Bangladesh Sporting Club outplayed Police Club by 9-1 goals at the same venue.

Sajib Hossain struck four, Gurjit Singh two while Rabinder Singh, Joginder Singh and Rubel Hossain scored one each for the winners. Jamil Bin Talib netted the lone goal for the Police team.
