Here's why Matthijs de Ligt to Bayern Munich is a top signing

Bayern Munich, after being heavily criticised by fans for being the misers among the top clubs of Europe, seems to be trying hard to shake that reputation off with two world-class transfers.

After signing Sadio Mane from Liverpool, they have reportedly signed Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus, for a fee that can become as high as €80 million which can potentially equalise Bayern's highest transfer fee for a single player, as they spent €80 million on another central defender, Lucas Hernandez in 2019.

Bayern underperformed in the last season with the manager Julian Nagelsmann still under criticism for his defensive mishaps which did cost a few vital games.

It is expected that the signing of de Ligt was mainly done to rejuvenate the defence, after the departure of Niklas Sule and a disappointing performance from last season's signing of Dayot Upamecano.

De Ligt used to be one of the best central defenders present on the market if not the best and the player himself wished to join Bayern Munich.

As a graduate of Ajax's youth academy, de Ligt possesses something unique which is quite uncharacteristic when it comes to the current crop of CBs; he is good both in passing and defensive aspects of the game.

Since Julian Nagelsmann is more likely to stick to his three-man defence this season as well, De Ligt as the sweeper in front of the goalkeeper can be a remedy to a lot of problems that Bayern are facing at this moment.

He also is a good set piece threat which is something Nagelsmann will want to exploit, as Bayern have not been as efficient from the set pieces as they used to be. And as Nagelsmann sometimes wants to crowd the midfield by bringing an extra man from the back, De Ligt is likely to transition in that role swiftly as well, since this is something he has done repeatedly in his Ajax days.

In every sense, the signing of Matthijs de Ligt is likely to become a potentially trophy-winning signing for Bayern Munich.

Bayern and Dutch players have always been a solid partnership, starting from Van Bommel to Robben, and Bayern fans would expect the same for Matthijs de Ligt.
