Roger Federer has won his 20th Grand Slam title and record-equaling sixth Australian Open crown on Sunday.
The Swiss outlasted sixth seed Marin Cilic 6-2 6-7(5) 6-3 3-6 6-1 at Rod Laver Arena in a marathon match.
With his second title in succession in Melbourne, Federer joins Roy Emerson and Novak Djokovic with six Australian Open singles crowns.
He also improved his record in Grand Slam finals to 20-10. He is now 6-1 in finals in Melbourne, his sole loss coming to Rafael Nadal in 2009.
Cilic, who became the first player to take a set from Federer in this year’s campaign, falls to 1-2 in major finals, according to Australian Open official website.
Federer will stay as world No.2 with the victory, while Cilic’s most successful Australian Open campaign sees the Croatian rise to world No.3, Nadal retaining his position at No.1.
