When Thomas Tuchel took over the Chelsea side in the mid-season, everyone was sceptical, including Chelsea fans, about what kind of appointment it would turn out to be.
There were many reasons for scepticism because Thomas Tuchel, as good a coach he is, never had a good track record of having a good relationship with the boards of the clubs he managed.
Be it falling out with the board at Borrusia Dortmund to falling out with Leonardo (The sporting director of PSG); another reason for scepticism was when it comes to appointing New managers, Chelsea never had a good track record because of their infamous hire and fire policy.
Chelsea fans thought the board would freeze this policy for a club legend like Lampard after an overachieving season under the Chelsea mid-field legend when the club was handed a transfer ban.
The signs of backing Lampard after the first season were present too when Chelsea spent over 200 million pounds on signing the likes of Havertz, Werner and Ziyech. It was a new era for Chelsea as Lampard also gave several academy players like Mason Mount, Reece James their breakthrough in the first 11.
But it was a short-lived euphoria for Chelsea fans as Lampard struggled to make the team work in the field. After a humiliating defeat against Leicester City, the board sacked Lampard and hired Thomas Tuchel.
Chelsea fans at that time were almost sure that Tuchel's signing would be a recap of Mourinho’s last season at Chelsea during his second stint. But little did they know Tuchel had a magic wand of his own.
Tuchel’s first task as a Chelsea manager was an away match against Wolves in which Chelsea drew 0-0 and were pretty subpar. But soon the German tactician started to work his magic and made Chelsea the best defensive side in the league.
Chelsea outplayed Atletico Madrid, Porto, Real Madrid both home and away and qualified in the champions league final for the third time, a feat some would have called impossible when Tuchel was appointed.
But Chelsea had a setback when they lost the FA Cup Final to Leicester City and lost the penultimate league match against Aston Villa, which jeopardised their UCL Qualification for the next season.
However, they qualified due to others' results being in favour. Then came the most awaited UCL final in Wembley stadium which Tuchel almost tactically dominated Guardiola and clinched the title.
Considering the circumstance Chelsea were in, it was almost a David vs Goliath kind of situation. But Chelsea is not the David anymore because they started their new season as favourites and the results clearly indicate that, as Chelsea annihilated Juventus with a 4-0 win which also happens to be Juventus’s largest away defeat in history.
However, Chelsea were not given the best club of the world award for their men’s team only. Chelsea F.C. women team also dominated the domestic league under Emma Hayes and almost won the women’s champions league losing only to a much better FC Barcelona.
Both men’s and women’s team shining is just a testament to how Chelsea has grown to become one of the best clubs in the world and the best club award is just the perfect recognition for their exploits on the field.
