Argentina name ex-West Ham ace Lionel Scaloni as interim manager

Argentina on Friday have named former West Ham star Lionel Scaloni as interim boss for their upcoming friendlies against Guatemala and Colombia.

The South American nation is still looking for a permanent successor after Jorge Sampaoli quit following the disappointing World Cup campaign.

But they have turned to the ex-Premier League defender for the clashes next month.

An Argentine Football Association (AFA) statement, said: “The AFA informs that after a meeting of the executive committee, Lionel Scaloni will coach the future friendlies along with his assistants Pablo Aimar and Martin Tocalli.”

But AFA president Claudio Tapia also added he was going to take his time finding a permanent successor, according to The Sun.

Scaloni, 40, has previously worked with the national side as an assistant coach.

He has been in charge of Argentina’s Under-17s alongside fellow former international Pablo Aimar.

Scaloni, a right-back who played for West Ham back in 2006 after joining on loan from Deportivo La Coruna, made 13 appearances for the Hammers.

He won a total of seven caps for his country and also had spells at Racing Santander, Lazio, Mallorca and Atalanta.

Argentina will meet Guatemala in Los Angeles on September 7 before taking on Colombia in New Jersey four days later.
