Google Doodle celebrates Nazrul’s birth anniversary

Search engine giant Google has created a new Doodle on its homepage, marking the 121st birth anniversary of Bengali poet, musician, writer and activist Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Google made an alteration on its Bangladeshi homepage on Monday, showing the poet holding a green book at his middle age while the young poet standing steady inside the flame of the movement of independence.

Nazrul’s revolutionary poem “Bidrohi” (“The Rebel”), which was marked by a vehement stance against colonialism and global oppression, inspired the Doodle artwork, google says.

A prominent voice of the Indian independence movement, Nazrul was a fierce advocate for religious tolerance, freedom, and the fight against injustice, earning him the nickname “Bidrohi Kobi” (“Rebel Poet”).

Born on May 25, 1899 in Bardhaman district of West Bengal in India, the poet had inspired people to fight against injustice and repression of the colonial rule through his writings.

For his incredible literary contributions, Nazrul was named the national poet of Bangladesh in 1972.
