C'wealth leaders approve Charles to succeed Queen

Commonwealth leaders have approved Prince Charles as the successor to Queen Elizabeth II as head of the group.

The group’s heads of government took the decision at a meeting at Windsor Castle in UK on Friday, Sky News reported citing unnamed sources.

The comes after the Queen publicly endorsed her son to take the role during Thursday's opening of the major Commonwealth summit of prime ministers and presidents.

She told heads of Government at Buckingham Palace: "It is my sincere wish that the Commonwealth will continue to offer stability and continuity for future generations, and will decide that one day the Prince of Wales should carry on the important work started by my father in 1949.

There have been calls for the role to be rotated around the 53 member-states, most of which are former British territories.

But in recent days the queen, the British government and other leaders have backed Charles.
